WASHINGTON (AP) ? Whether negotiated in a rush before the new year or left for early January, the fiscal deal President Barack Obama and Congress cobble together will be far smaller than what they initially envisioned as an alternative to purposefully distasteful tax increases and spending cuts.
Instead, their deal, if a deal they indeed cut, will put off some big decisions about tax and entitlement changes and leave other deadlines in place that will likely lead to similar moments of brinkmanship, some in just a matter of weeks.
Republican and Democratic negotiators in the Senate were hoping for a deal as early as Sunday on what threshold to set for increased tax rates, whether to keep current inheritance tax rates and exemptions and how to pay for jobless benefits and avoid cuts in Medicare payments to doctors.
An agreement would halt automatic across-the-board tax increases for virtually every American and perhaps temporarily put off some steep spending cuts in defense and domestic programs.
Gone, however, is the talk of a grand deal that would tackle broad spending and revenue demands and set the nation on a course to lower deficits. Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner were once a couple hundred billion dollars apart of a deal that would have reduced the deficit by more than $2 trillion over ten years.
Republicans have complained that Obama has demanded too much in tax revenue and hasn't proposed sufficient cuts or savings in the nation's massive health care programs.
In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" that aired Sunday, Obama upped the pressure on Republicans to negotiate a fiscal deal, arguing that GOP leaders have rejected his past attempts to strike a bigger and more comprehensive bargain.
"The offers that I've made to them have been so fair that a lot of Democrats get mad at me," Obama said.
The interview was taped Saturday while aides to the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., were engaged in negotiations in the Capitol in hopes of having something to present senators as early as Sunday.
"I was modestly optimistic yesterday, but we don't yet see an agreement," Obama said, referring to his mood Friday. "And now the pressure's on Congress to produce."
The trimmed ambitions of today are a far cry from the upbeat bipartisan rhetoric of just six weeks ago, when the leadership of Congress went to the White House to set the stage for negotiations to come.
"I outlined a framework that deals with reforming our tax code and reforming our spending," Boehner said as the leaders gathered on the White House driveway on Nov. 16.
"We understand that it has to be about cuts, it has to be about revenue, it has to be about growth, it has to be about the future," House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said at the time. "I feel confident that a solution may be in sight."
And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., offered a bold prediction: "There is no more let's do it some other time. We are going to do it now."
That big talk is over for now.
Senate negotiators were haggling over what threshold of income to set as the demarcation between current tax rates and higher tax rates. They were negotiating over estate limits and tax levels, how to extend unemployment benefits, how to prevent cuts in Medicare payments to doctors and how to keep a minimum income tax payment designed for the rich from hitting about 28 million middle class taxpayers.
But the deal was not meant to settle other outstanding issues, including more than $1 trillion in cuts over 10 years, divided equally between the Pentagon and other government spending. The deal also would not address an extension of the nation's borrowing limit, which the government is on track to reach any day but which the Treasury can put off through accounting measures for about two months.
That means Obama and the Congress are already on a new collision path. Republicans say they intend to use the debt ceiling as leverage to extract more spending cuts from the president. Obama has been adamant that unlike 2011, when the country came close to defaulting on its debts, he will not yield to those Republican demands.
As the day ended Saturday, there were few signs of success on a scaled-back deal. But no one was declaring a stalemate either.
Lawmakers have until the new Congress convenes to pass any compromise, and even the calendar mattered. Democrats said they had been told House Republicans might reject a deal until after Jan. 1, to avoid a vote to raise taxes before they had technically gone up, and then vote to cut taxes after they had risen.
Republicans said they were willing to bow to Obama's call for higher taxes on the wealthy as part of a deal to prevent them from rising on those less well-off.
Democrats said Obama was sticking to his campaign call for tax increases above $250,000 in annual income, even though he said in recent negotiations he said he could accept $400,000. There was no evidence of agreement even at the higher level.
Obama, who once proposed nearly $1.6 trillion in tax revenue over 10 years, would get about half of that if he succeeded in getting a $250,000 threshold over 10 years. At a $400,000 level, the revenue figure drops to about $600 billion over a decade.
Republicans want to leave the estate tax at 35 percent after exempting the first $5 million in estate value. Officials said the White House wants a 45 percent tax after a $3.5 million exemption. Without any action by Congress, it would climb to a 55 percent tax after a $1 million exemption on Jan. 1. Obama's proposal would generate more than $100 billion in additional revenue over 10 years.
Democrats stressed their unwillingness to make concessions on both income taxes and the estate tax, and hoped Republicans would choose which mattered more to them.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL says it has made a new contract offer to the players in an attempt to end the lockout and save the season.
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly says in a statement Friday that a "comprehensive" proposal was made a day earlier, although he would not discuss details.
He adds that the league is "hopeful" that once the union and its negotiating committee review the proposal "they will share it with the players. We want to be back on the ice as soon as possible."
The lockout is in its 104th day. The NHL says it doesn't want a season of less than 48 games. To make that possible, a deal likely must be reached by mid-January. The sides haven't met face to face since talks with a federal mediator broke down Dec. 13.

The 3-month-old, 3-pound feline, named Azazel, was adopted about 2 p.m. Thursday by a Lake Oswego woman, said David Lytle, an agency spokesman.
He estimated at least 100 more dogs, cats and other small animals will find homes before 2012 ends.
"Our yearly goal is to find homes for at least 11,000 animals," Lytle said. "For us to hit that mark for another year is an accomplishment."
Last week, 106 animals were adopted Dec. 20, a single-day record for the Humane Society. Last year, it set a record of 11,521 animals adopted, the most since the society's new shelter in Portland opened in 2000, Lytle said.
The society has slashed adoption fees by 50 percent or more to empty its kennels and other animal areas.Fees, which include spaying or neutering, initial shots and microchips, range from $50 for a dog 1 year and older to $12 for an adult cat. Puppies, which are not discounted, still cost $200 to $400.
The shelter, 1067 N.E. Columbia Blvd., is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday.

Well, I think from the children?s rights perspective one of the biggest problems that children face is being recognized as individual human beings with rights. And I think one of the biggest challenges faced by children is actually being recognized as members of society, and having been recognized as members of society, that society is actually making provision for them in terms of meeting their needs. And of course within the current economic climate those needs for particular sections of children society become particularly acute.
One of the biggest problems is that there are too many areas of society which don?t recognize the need to put children?s best interests at the forefront of thinking, plus considering parents arguing about children or courts considering whether the state should take children into care put children?s interests at the very forefront of their thinking. More generally, I think that government departments and educational bodies often don?t. So, rather than putting children rights at the forefront to meeting their needs, those needs tend to blend into the background and get substituted by adopt concerns.
I think the difficulty with the economic situation is that of course governments have less money to spend and that means that children are impacted in the sense that the services they need and the services particularly vulnerable children need tend to be the first to fall away. And in that respect I think the thinking is quite short term because it is by pushing in service provisions of those vulnerable children that really governments can save money down the line in terms of healthcare, criminal justice and another such costs.
And I think the problem is that children are easy to forget when one is cutting services and cutting costs because of course they are not normally able to stand up and protest that fact. Children are not, generally speaking, a voting block. They don?t generally have a voice within the democratic process and therefore governments, perhaps not deliberately, but in any event tend not to listen to children as a political force. And in those circumstances, if you don?t have adults who are standing up and fighting for children and their interests and their rights, then those rights and interests tend to get forgotten, particularly in times of economic austerity.
I think we already have the laws that we need, and in particular we have a treaty ? the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child ? which in fact all countries but two in the world have signed up to. And article 12 of that convention requires that states and state organizations listen to children and take account of what they say. And what is really required I think, fundamentally, to get round these issues is a proper implementation in each of the countries of that UN Convention.
I?m not really an expert on child poverty but I can speak from what I see on a day-to-day basis in cases in which I?m involved in in court. And I think that firstly, child poverty and children?s interests more generally are being affected by the current economic climate. I think that measures of austerity are making services less available, meaning that children?s needs are going unmet. And I think from my perspective, certainly what I see on the ground, I would say very little progress is being made, both in respect of eradicating child poverty and in respect of effectively meeting the needs of vulnerable children.
As understand it, certainly our Government has performed in a manifest a commitment to reduce child poverty. But like all political manifests, they are often the victims of events and circumstances. And certainly, I think the current economic climate has made it much more difficult for the government to meet its targets when it is compelled to cut out for reasons of austerity the very services that will assist in hitting the target. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has been signed up to by each of the member states of the EU and the European Convention on Human Rights has to be read and interpreted in accordance with the UN Convention.
So, all members of the EU, all those member states should be applying the UN Convention on children?s rights and should be interpreting, both the European Convention and their domestic laws in accordance with that Convention. And I know that many, if not all states, make efforts to do that. The extent to which those efforts are successful is inevitably bound up with the resources that can be applied to that end. I think it is the overarching law, if you like, it is the one that should guarantee that children?s rights are treated consistently across the member states of the EU, including the UK.
Now, each state will have its own laws that hopefully advance children?s welfare and children?s rights but all those laws need to be viewed and applied in a context of the UN Convention which hopefully provides consistency and rigor in relation to each of the state?s domestic laws. I think it is the question really of not having new laws. We?ve got I think quite enough laws aimed at guaranteeing children?s welfare and children?s rights. I think it is about effectively implementing those laws on a consistent basis.
And the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child publishes in think by annual basis its views about how countries are doing with implementation. And certainly the Committee on a regular basis criticizes all the countries in the EU for not effectively and not fully enough implementing the UN Convention. So, governments need to be working harder and more rigorously at actually making sure the Convention is applied in a way that affects and improves the lives of individual children on a day-to-day basis.
The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child requires those who are signed up to the Convention to report, I think on a five year basis, on how they are doing in terms of implementing the Convention. And when those reports are considered, then the Committee makes recommendations to the state in question as to how they can tighten up and improve their implementation of the Convention.
As matter stands, children cannot take a case, if you like, to the UN and argue it, although there is now a new protocol to the Convention for states also to sign up to which will allow children to actually make complaints to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child about breaches of Convention in their own particular cases.Source: http://english.ruvr.ru/2012_12_27/Modern-society-children-first/

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? Rex Ryan stepped to the podium, looked out at the cameras and opened his news conference with a warning.
"You're not going to believe this one," the New York Jets coach declared without any hint of a smile.
In what has been a bizarre season, the Jets' wacky quarterback situation took yet another twist. Greg McElroy has a concussion ? which he didn't reveal until Thursday ? and will be replaced by Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback in the season finale at Buffalo on Sunday.
"We've come to find out that Greg wasn't exactly truthful with our training staff after the game," said Ryan, who acknowledged he was "stunned" to hear the news. "He never disclosed that he had symptoms after the game to our trainers. Right now, he's being evaluated for a concussion."
McElroy, preparing to make his second NFL start in place of the benched Sanchez, was lifting weights Thursday morning and started experiencing headaches, Ryan said. McElroy went to the team's training staff and then revealed he was suffering concussion-like symptoms after being sacked 11 times in the Jets' 27-17 loss to San Diego last Sunday.
McElroy and head trainer John Mellody then went to Ryan to tell the coach the news. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano said he was "pretty silent" when he found out a few minutes after Ryan.
"It's another bump in the road here," Sparano said, "and it's something we've become a little accustomed to dealing with."
Ryan was not certain exactly when McElroy suffered the concussion, but said there was no way he would play McElroy against the Bills and the third-stringer will "definitely be out." McElroy had been listed on the injury report Wednesday with a mild abdominal strain, but was a full participant in practice and was expected to play without any issues.
"I admire his courage and everything else, but you have to be truthful and I think that's the lesson learned here with the medical staff," said Ryan, who spoke to the entire team about concussions after practice. "The fact he really wanted to play, I understand the competitive side of Greg and all that, but the most important thing is the health of the players.
"Obviously, I feel fortunate that something like this showed up without him going out there and putting himself in harm's way."
While Sanchez wouldn't comment on whether players choosing to play through head injuries is common in the NFL, Tebow acknowledged that it probably does happen around the league because of job security.
"You fight hard to earn something and you don't want to jeopardize that with an injury, for sure," said Tebow, who added that he has never been in McElroy's situation. "I think that's definitely something guys will think about."
Ryan chose to start Sanchez over Tim Tebow because the team has just two practices and a walkthrough to prepare before the game. He also cited Sanchez's success against the Bills in the season opener, when he threw three touchdown passes in the Jets' 48-28 win.
Sanchez appeared to be on his way to a solid season, but it ended up being his best game. He was benched for the first time in his four-year career after turning over the ball five times at Tennessee on Dec. 17.
"I'm excited to play, obviously," Sanchez said. "You just never want to see something like that happen to a teammate, somebody I really respect. You feel for Greg and I'll be ready to play."
Sanchez was a bit surprised when Ryan told him he'd be starting because he thought McElroy just wasn't feeling well.
"I guess I didn't expect it," Sanchez said. "I wasn't coming into today thinking he had a concussion. I never would've known."
McElroy leapfrogged Tebow on the depth chart to start against the Chargers. After finding out about McElroy's condition, Ryan spoke with both Sanchez and Tebow to tell them of his decision.
"Obviously, Tim's not happy with that, as you'd expect," Ryan said.
The news came on the heels of some tension between Ryan and Tebow last week, when the popular backup quarterback told the coach he was "disappointed" at not getting the start and wanted to play "regular quarterback." ESPN New York first reported Sunday that Tebow asked out of the wildcat, and a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that to The Associated Press. The two met again last Friday to clear the air, and Tebow reiterated that he was willing to do anything the team asked him to do.
Tebow insisted Wednesday that he did not refuse to do anything and acknowledged that Ryan might have misinterpreted what he said. Ryan said he understands that Tebow is frustrated at the situation and by not starting, but again would not disclose anything said between the two in their conversations last week.
Tebow said he didn't think Ryan's choice to play Sanchez was in any way punitive, and added that he and the coach have a "great" relationship.
"When you're a competitor, you want to play," Tebow said. "But I understood his decision and I just let him know, just like always, that I'll do whatever I can to help the team."
Tebow will be the No. 2 quarterback on Sunday at Buffalo, and could play ? but it won't be as the starter.
"Obviously, he'd like a shot at it," Ryan said, "but with the situation the way it is, it's a short window, really, to get the preparation time in and I just think it's best for our football team."
With the way the season has played out, from the quarterback controversies to the injuries suffered by key players, Ryan was asked if this is the strangest year he has ever experienced in the NFL.
"Yeah, I would say that's pretty accurate," Ryan said, laughing. "And, we've had some strange ones."
Added Tebow, chuckling: "It's been interesting."

Whether facing off in the national championship game, playing in the Final Four, or just meeting in the regular season, the two programs on opposite sides of the country have created compelling matchups.
The undefeated teams will renew their annual contest Saturday when the second-ranked Huskies (10-0) visit the No. 1 Cardinal (11-0).
"It's a rivalry for us, but more than that, it's a measuring stick," said Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, whose Cardinal have held the top spot in the poll for the past six weeks. "When the ball goes up, nobody cares anything about rankings."
The last time the teams met in the Bay Area in 2010, the Cardinal ended the Huskies' NCAA record 90-game winning streak. UConn will try and return the favor by snapping Stanford's streak of 82 straight home victories.
"It's going to be two really competitive teams, it's going to be a dogfight," UConn senior Kelly Faris said. "Two years ago that's what it was."
On the boards, Stanford's 6-foot-3 Chiney Ogwumike will battle with UConn's 6-5 Stefanie Dolson and 6-4 freshman Breanna Stewart. The younger sister of All-American Nneka Ogwumike, who graduated from Stanford, is averaging 21.8 points and 12.8 rebounds for the Cardinal.
Stewart is averaging a team-high 16.6 points and 7.2 rebounds, while Dolson is contributing 11.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
It marks the 51st meeting between the top two teams in the poll. The No. 1 seed holds a 31-19 lead. UConn and Stanford have been in three of those contests over the past few seasons with the Huskies winning all of them.
"The 1 versus 2 thing makes for better TV, but it doesn't change how we prepare," Stanford's Toni Kokenis said. "We are defending our home court, regardless of the opponent. But yeah, we ended their streak two years ago and I'm sure they want to do the same thing to us."
Stanford hasn't lost at Maples Pavilion since March 18, 2007, when Florida State beat the Cardinal in the second round of the NCAA tournament. UConn brought its streak to Stanford almost exactly two years ago only to see the Cardinal stop it with a 71-59 win in front of an enthusiastic crowd. VanDerveer expects a similar atmosphere Saturday.
"We're excited we're playing here," VanDerveer said. "Our team has played very well, but that's not the deciding factor. You have to make baskets and rebound and make stops. We know it's what you do on the court."
The Huskies, who beat Stanford in Hartford by 10 points last season, aren't concerned about ending the Cardinal's streak. They are just trying to improve.
"I don't think I'd go out there with the mindset that we have to break their streak," Faris said. "It's another game. But the whole streak thing, if you focus on that, you're not going to be doing the right thing."
Both coaches are aware that it's just one game in December with conference play about to start after the New Year.
"If you win on Saturday you know you beat a really good team," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "If you lose you know you got a lot of work to do to beat a really good team down the road."
Connecticut leads the series 7-6, including winning five of the last eight meetings ? dating back to 2005. Stanford, unlike a lot of other teams in the country, has been able to stay close to the Huskies in the losses, losing most by a dozen points or less.
"You have two of the best offensive teams in the country, not to say we're going to see who can win 110-109," he said. "We try to make scoring and scoring often our priority. Maybe that's why it's become such a great rivalry."
Unlike other rivalries in the sport that have ended during the past few years because of conference realignment or teams refusing to play each other, UConn and Stanford will continue for at least two more seasons. They will open next season in Connecticut.
"As long as Stanford wants to play we'll play them. I have a lot of respect for them, obviously, as a university and certainly their coaching staff," Auriemma said. "They're great people. And the kind of people they recruit are great people. So I'm thrilled that it was done. Really. I think that's a great thing for us."
After playing Stanford, UConn will head to Oregon before going home to open up its Big East schedule.
"Playing games on the road at the early part of the season is very important," Auriemma said. "Coming out here and playing Stanford and knowing how hard it is to play them, especially here. It's a great opportunity for us at this point in the season. As soon as we're done on this trip we have Notre Dame at home. Playing two teams in the top five in the country in a matter of a week or so is exactly what we need right about now."

(Reuters) - NBC News anchor David Gregory is being investigated by police after displaying what he said was a high-capacity gun clip on Sunday's broadcast of "Meet the Press," Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said Wednesday.
Gregory held up what appeared to be a 30-round gun magazine - which would be barred under Washington municipal code - while hosting the nationally broadcast interview with National Rifle Association Chief Executive Officer Wayne LaPierre.
"Here is a magazine for ammunition that carries 30 bullets," Gregory said as he held aloft the black cartridge, according to video posted on the network's website.
"Now isn't it possible that, if we got rid of these, if we replaced them and said ?Well, you could only have a magazine that carries five bullets or ten bullets,' isn't it just possible that we can reduce the carnage in a situation like Newtown?" Gregory asked LaPierre.
"I don't think it's what will work,'' LaPierre responded.
The network had contacted the police department prior to Sunday's broadcast "inquiring if they could use a high capacity magazine for the segment," police spokesman Araz Alali said on Wednesday.
"NBC was informed that possession of a high-capacity magazine was not permissible and their request was denied."
Alali, the police spokesman, declined to elaborate on the investigation into NBC.
Washington's municipal code prohibits possession, sale or transfer of "any large capacity ammunition feeding device, regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm."
The maximum penalty for conviction on such a charge is a $1,000 fine and one year in prison.
NBC spokeswoman Erika Masonhall, contacted by email, said the network had no comment on the investigation.
After the broadcast, which originated in Washington, a number of bloggers and websites questioned Gregory's actions and the legality of the gun clip.

That's not surprising. Unfortunately, it always seemed unlikely that our politicians would agree to any vote that could be framed as them having voted to "raise taxes" ? which any deal before December 31 could have been framed as.
The more likely scenario seemed to be that politicians would wait until taxes increased automatically on January 1 and then heroically vote to cut them ? at least some of them.
And that's still my bet about what will happen in January.
But just because it seemed likely that politicians would be ruled by "politics" instead of pragmatism doesn't mean this is something to be proud of.
And let's be clear about what has happened in the past two months.
What has happened is that the political party that has based its entire existence on never agreeing to a tax hike of any kind has essentially agreed to tax hike for the entire country.
By not accepting the Democrats' offer to extend the Bush tax cuts for ~98% of Americans, the Republicans have agreed to let taxes rise on ALL Americans.
The Republicans have done this, it appears, only (or at least mainly) in a stubborn attempt to preserve lower tax rates on the highest-earning Americans.
And now those tax rates, too, will go up.
And the economy will slow down.
The Republicans have tried to pin the blame for the tax hikes on the Democrats, but most Americans have seen through this. And rightly so. The Republicans agreed to the coming tax hikes when they voted for the legislation in the summer of 2011. And now, by refusing to extend the tax cuts for all Americans but the richest 2%, the Republicans have tacitly once again agreed to raise taxes on all Americans.
This is what happens when a party that used to be known for pragmatism and responsibility allows itself to be hijacked by ideologues.
A deal to mute the impact of the Fiscal Cliff and raise the debt ceiling should be within easy reach of reasonable people on both sides of the aisle.
Unfortunately, our government isn't run by reasonable people anymore. Especially on the Republican side.
NOTE: This is my personal view, not "Business Insider's" So if you want to lecture someone about how the Republicans are absolutely right to agree to raise taxes on the entire country just to avoid voting to increase taxes on the highest-earning Americans, please direct those notes to me.

Workers Compensation is codified in Louisiana under Revised Statute 23:1021 et seq. There are a?myriad?of rules and definitions within this chapter of the code that would make any contractors head spin. There are a few key items to remember when classifying employees. First and foremost is that there is a presumption of employee status, as seen in La. R.S. 23:1044. This can be overcome by a number of factors which would make the worker, an independent contrator rather than a employee. La R.S. 23:1045 is where the law states that independent contractors and subcontractors are exempt from coverage. Although the price to insure all employees under workers comp insurance is high, the price that is paid if an accident happens to an uninsured worker is much higher. Furthermore, when the insuring companies do an audit at the end of the year of the status, there can be a hefty price tag for improper reporting.
I represent a number of clients who are learning the hard way that companies like LWCC and Louisiana Home Builders?Association?are not fun to litigate against for a contractor trying to make profits. These companies have either in-house attorneys or law firms who handle these cases day in and day out. There is almost no incentive for them to settle claims?because?there is no fear of pricey litigation. As for the contractor, attorney fee bills keep going higher and at the end of the day the contractor can pay double and triple of what they would have if they had properly reported or settled early.
So let this be a warning to all contractors who are trying to push the line when it comes to workers compensation insurance, its just not worth it. Just like fighting any insurance company, even if the insurer is wrong, they will fight to the bitter end to be proven so. Taking an early haircut, so that you can get back to making money in the industry, can be a win-win for your construction company.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The pieces of the puzzle that have been the Lakers' confounding season so far are starting to fall into place.
Kobe Bryant engineered a second-half comeback, the defense stepped up, and Los Angeles beat the New York Knicks 100-94 on Tuesday, extending its winning streak to five games.
"We're .500," a smiling Dwight Howard said. "We did it on Christmas, too. I knew this day would come."
Bryant scored 34 points in his NBA-record 15th Christmas Day game and Metta World Peace added 20 points and seven rebounds while defending Carmelo Anthony, whose 34 points led the Knicks. Anthony said he hyperextended his left knee, but expects to play on Wednesday in Phoenix.
Bryant, the league's leading scorer, has topped 30 or more points in nine straight games.
"If you're going to play on Christmas, it's always better to win. Makes it all worthwhile," said Bryant, who would soon hop a flight to Denver, getting there ahead of the Nuggets, who played the Clippers in the other half of the holiday doubleheader at Staples Center.
The Lakers improved to 14-14 ? 9-9 under new coach Mike D'Antoni ? and upped their holiday record to 21-18, including 13-9 at home. They returned to .500 for the first time since they were 8-8 on Nov. 30.
"It's so early in the season to have turned a corner," Bryant said. "We have everybody in the lineup and we're starting to see how we want to play."
The Knicks controlled most of the game behind Anthony and J.R. Smith, who had 24 points. But they struggled offensively in the fourth, when Anthony was limited to seven points and Smith had five as the Lakers' defense clamped down. World Peace fouled out with 1:58 to play and the Lakers ahead by four.
World Peace credited his defense on Anthony to "old-school basketball."
"I'm back in shape and it's a little tough to guard me," he said.
Steve Nash said: "This is what he's been doing all year. He gets his hands on a lot of balls, pounds on the other team's best guy. You can't win without that type of effort."
Smith's 3-pointer pulled New York to 96-94. After Pau Gasol made one of two free throws, Smith missed another 3 that would have tied the game at 97 with 32 seconds left.
"We missed a lot of easy shots, a lot of little chippers around the basket, shots that we normally make," Anthony said. "There were some plays that we thought should have went our way down the stretch, but for the most part, we fought. I'll take this effort any night. If we continue to play with this effort, we'll win a lot of games."
With Bryant double-teamed, Nash passed to Gasol, who dunked with 12 seconds to go, punctuating a win that sent Lakers fans, frustrated by the team's struggles and coaching change, home happy. The Lakers avenged a 116-107 loss in New York on Dec. 13.
A smiling Howard called Gasol's driving slam "a submarine dunk because he was very low to the ground."
Gasol responded, "I don't dunk as often as I used to so it felt good. I took it right down the lane and finished strong."
Nash had 16 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in his second game in nearly two months. He missed 24 straight games while recovering from a small fracture in his lower left leg. Howard had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Gasol had 13 points and eight rebounds.
"It was an important win for us as we were a little bit desperate," Nash said. "We've gone through a lot since Mike Brown ? new coach, new offense. It's been a difficult transition."
Bryant had eight of the Lakers' first 10 points to open the fourth during a run that provided their first lead since the opening quarter in a game matching the two teams that have played the most on Christmas Day.
They took the lead for good on Bryant's basket with 7:38 remaining. Anthony and Tyson Chandler were in foul trouble in the fourth, with Chandler fouling out late.
"They just were a little bit more aggressive," Anthony said. "Kobe got it going and Steve Nash hit some big shots down the stretch. When you have a guy like Nash doing that, it's kind of tough. Those guys know how to play. They've been waiting for Steve Nash to get back, so it's just a matter of then sticking it out until he did."
The Knicks opened the third on a 15-5 run, with Anthony setting up on the perimeter and hitting two 3-pointers as part of his 10 points that stretched their lead to 61-53. His jumper provided the Knicks' largest lead of the game, 69-60.
Bryant and Nash ignited the quiet atmosphere by leading a 17-9 run that drew the Lakers to 78-77 going into the fourth. They combined to score 15 points, although Bryant missed two free throws to end the third that would have given the Lakers their first lead since early in the game.
The Knicks' earlier roll dissolved in missed shots and a technical on Chandler for arguing a call.
"We were more determined, fought for everything," Nash said about the second half.
World Peace scored 16 points in the second quarter, including eight in a row, when the Lakers played catch-up most of the way. His 3-pointer gave the Lakers their first lead of the period with 1:10 remaining. Smith tied it up with a free throw before Nash's jumper sent the Lakers into halftime leading 51-49.
"We're playing really well together," World Peace said. "Kobe is really playing excellent now. He's still being aggressive on the offensive end, but he's giving everybody a chance to be aggressive. Pau is making strong, aggressive moves."
Bryant scored the Lakers' final nine points of the first quarter to give them a 25-23 lead. D'Antoni's plan of having Darius Morris guard Anthony didn't last long after he scored five of the Knicks' first seven points.
"I thought he'd get warmed up before he started firing," World Peace said.
NOTES: Bryant surpassed Oscar Robertson as the league's all-time Christmas Day scorer with 383 points. Robertson had 377. ... Knicks F/C Amare Stoudemire shot some before the game. He's been out all season after left knee surgery. "I'm not quite there yet, but I'm making progress," he said. "I've just got to stay patient and stay ready. We've been doing extremely intense work, as far as cardio." ... Knicks C Marcus Camby had four points and four rebounds in 8 minutes. He's been sidelined by a sore left foot and barely played this season. ... Asked about Bryant as an MVP candidate, D'Antoni said, "You can't put anybody MVP if you're below .500." ... In their only other Christmas Day meeting in 1963, the Lakers beat the Knicks 134-126 behind 47 points by Jerry West and 27 from Elgin Baylor. ... While trying to figure out where can I buy a collector car, one of the best places to check out is online. There are dozens of classic car sites out on the web where owners can buy, sell, and trade collector cars. You can find almost any type of collector car in various conditions. Collector cars often appear in auctions. Buying a collector car at an auction is a lot like playing the lottery. For one, you can never be sure what will show up at auction or what condition it will be in. Second, you can never be sure how the bidding will go. If there is a large crowd at the auction, chances are the price of a collector car will go high. If there are not many people at the auction, you might find the cars going for a lower bid. Be aware that auctions are popular places for collectors of classic cars. Everyone is there for the same reason you are; they are looking for a bargain.
