BUSINESS BRIEFS | Aspen Daily News Online

New online food business in the works

Two Redstone residents are planning to launch an online marketplace showcasing the products of some of the finest artisan food producers in North America.

Aspen Valley Foods, which expects to launch operations in late 2013 or early 2014, will be based in Basalt and could employ up to 100 people within five years, according to a press release from company founders Alan Pilkington and Martha Silva. Initially, it will offer over 400 food products in 16 food categories with an emphasis on working with smaller, Colorado-based producers, the release says. All items, from wine to sausage, will be ?source verified,? sustainably produced and quality tested.

Pilkington and Silva, while having secured commitments for much of the start-up capital, are seeking more using the online platform IndieGoGo. ?The Ski Home,? a? new mansion on Ute Avenue, was recognized in the residential category. Architect Leathem Stearn designed the property, which incorporates technological innovations resulting in a 60 percent reduction in energy use, according to a press release.

Aspen commercial real estate broker Ruth Kruger was recently charged by FIABCI with establishing its U.S. awards, and was on-hand in New York to make the presentations.
