Snapseed (for iPhone)

Instagram is far from the only app in the iOS photo-fun game. Nik Software is a more venerable maker of photo enhancement software, having developed pro-level effects for Photoshop for years. The company's Snapseed can not only add zest or interest to images shot with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch camera, but also share it on Flickr, Facebook, or Twitter. Nik's years of image-editing prowess shine in Snapseed and the app's interface takes good advantage of the iPhone's touch screen. Thanks to Nik being sold to Google last fall, the app is now free.

Interface
Snapseed's interface is simple and clear, yet punches a lot of powerful and detailed capabilities. After you open or shoot a photo, you'll see rectangles along the bottom of the screen (or along the side if you're in landscape orientation), which you can swipe through to choose edits, adjustments, and effects. Simple swiping gestures let you adjust contrast, brightness, and color, or you can have the program choose those automatically or choose control points in the image. Back and forward arrows at the bottom corners take you through a workflow process from editing to sharing.

Once you learn that swiping up and down selects the effect, and right to left adjusts its strength, you've pretty much got the interface down. In the unlikely event that you do get confused, a question mark is always displaying in the upper-right hand corner; touching it overlays helpful hand-drawn instructions showing where to tap or swipe to perform a function. During editing, a picture icon lets you compare your work to its previous edit state, and in the menu interface, you can simply hold a finger against the screen to see the original, to which you can revert at any time. ?

Snapseed's "Automatic" fix is pretty limited (to contrast and color correction), but the app adroitly handles photo-fixing basics such as brightness, contrast, cropping and straightening. And its sharpening capability, accessible from the Details option, Nik borrows from its pro-level Photoshop plugin, Sharpener Pro, even letting you adjust with sliders for strength and "structure." This give you a powerful way to bring out hidden textures.

Special effects include Drama, Grunge, vintage, center focus, frames, and "tilt shift"--a popular technique that gives photos a miniaturized look. These go far beyond what you get in Instagram and Hipstamatic. I was also impressed that many of the adjustments and effects can be applied to specific areas of the image using control points.

The Drama tool added just that to a bleak looking landscape I tried it on, while Vintage offers nine old-photo looks and several texture options. Grunge is one of Snapseed's most impressive tools, with a whopping 1500 settings, each a different degrees of color emphasis or fading. Once you're done with tweaking the actual image, you can place it in a choice of frames that give the photo a mounted appearance.

Snapseed offers one of the hottest effects in digital photography today?"tilt shift." I use quotation marks, because, although this is the popular term for the miniaturization and saturation technique, tilt-shift is actually a geometry effect only possible with expensive lenses. Snapseed lets you choose an elliptical or linear focus area for the effect, and the results can be impressive.

Sharing
Snapseed lets you share your photo creations directly to your iPhone library, send it in an email, or upload it to Facebook or Twitter. For some reason (anger at Marissa Meyer for jumping ship?) Yahoo's Flickr has been removed as a sharing option. Since that's the largest and most active photo sharing service on the net, it's an unfortunate loss, especially because the app previously did a good job letting me choose the photo set, privacy setting, caption, tags, and description for uploaded photos.

More than Speedy Snapping
Instagram certainly offers fun ways to doll up your iPhone photos, but Snapseed does the best job of combining powerful editing and enhancing capabilities with a clear, usable interface. Though Adobe's own Photoshop Touch offers more Photoshop-like capabilities, Snapseed is a more complete package, with tools for red-eye reduction and straightening. If you just want to have fun and want another way to share, Instagram is for you. But if you really want to perfect and create with your iPhone photographs, then Snapseed is your best choice.

Unknown Huawei P6-U06 smartphone shows off 6.2mm profile in Chinese certification

The FCC isn't the only agency playing with devices we don't even know exist, and its Chinese equivalent has recently had some hands-on time with an unknown Huawei smartphone, codename P6-U06. Luckily, there are a few pics and specs to accompany the filing, which tell us it weighs 120g (4.2 ounces) and measures 132.6 x 65.5 x 6.18mm (5.2 x 2.6 x 0.2 inch), meaning it could be the super-slim P series handset a Huawei exec hinted at in January. It didn't materialize at MWC, but the same exec promised more was to come in 2013, possibly starting with this P6-U06.

Those dimensions house a 4.7-inch TFT screen at 720p resolution, quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera on the back and an unusually large 5-megapixel sensor in the shooter up front. Unsurprisingly, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is listed as the OS, while GSM / WCDMA radios suggest Asia as the target market (not to mention the Chinese certification). That's all we've got on the P6-U06 for now, but in lieu of official press shots, the handset strikes a couple more candid poses after the break.

CFTC holds Twitter #HackCrash hearing tomorrow

It was one week ago this Tuesday that a hacked AP account tweeted, ?Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured? to its 1.9 million followers.

Moments later, the @AP twitter handle released a statement saying they had been hacked and that President Obama was fine, but the markets had already reacted. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 150 points and lost $136 billion in value before rebounding.

The Syrian Electronic Army, a group that backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and attacks western media for what they believe to be unfair coverage of the country's ongoing conflict, has taken responsibility for the hack.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is investigating the Twitter hoax and will hold a panel discussion on ?market issues resulting from the April 23 twitter attack? at tomorrow?s pre-scheduled CFTC technology meeting.

The CFTC?s technology committee is made up of bankers, scholars, and traders who, according to The New York Times, are looking at 28 different futures contracts to determine exactly how the AP?s erroneous tweet impacted markets.

While the CFTC has indicated that high frequency trading played a big part in the flash crash that followed the twitter hack, The Daily Ticker?s Henry Blodget disagrees. ?The problem here is not the high frequency traders, that?s a different discussion,? Blodget says.

In the United States, Blodget explains, hacking a Twitter account is still considered a harmless prank. ?This is serious. We live in an information economy, huge dollars are tied to it and it should be treated as such,? he says.

The Daily Ticker?s Aaron Task believes that the CFTC should be speaking with Twitter representatives, not just traders. ?Now that the SEC is allowing public companies to make these announcements on social media platforms, it does raise the possibility that somebody else?s account gets hacked and publically traded information gets out there that?s just all wrong,? Task says.

?It will,? confirms Blodget. ?It?s definitely going to happen.?

In the wake of the AP scandal, Twitter is reportedly testing a two-step security verification process that will make it more difficult for hackers to take over accounts.

Still, ?no system is unhackable,? says Blodget. ?This will continue to happen.?

Rationalizing the hack, Blodget claims that news and misinformation leaks occurred long before Twitter and they will continue no matter what security measures are put into place-- markets understand this.

?It doesn?t need to be this national crisis,? says Blodget.

Still, ?it absolutely does need to be taken extremely seriously when somebody does something that in certain communities might be considered a prank that actually has serious impact on markets and the economy and corporations,? he says.

Icelanders oust government over austerity program

By Balazs Koranyi and Robert Robertson

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Fatigued by years of austerity and swayed by promises of debt relief, Icelandic voters dumped the Social Democrats from power on Saturday, returning a center-right government that ruled over its stunning financial collapse just five years ago.

Once a European financial hub, this windswept north Atlantic island of glaciers, geysers and volcanoes has been limping along for years, still crippled from a crash that brought it to its knees in just a matter of days.

"We are offering a different road, a road to growth, protecting social security, better welfare and job creation," Independence Party leader Bjarni Benediktsson, the favorite to become the next prime minister after his party took first place in the vote, told Reuters as the results were coming in.

"What we won't compromise about is cutting taxes and lifting the living standards of people," said Benediktsson, 43, a former professional soccer player.

The victory caps a remarkable comeback for Benediktsson.

Just two weeks ago he considered resigning after record low poll ratings prompted calls for him to hand over his party's leadership to his deputy.

Hailing from a wealthy family with extensive business interests, Benediktsson, an avid trout and salmon fisher, was considered out of touch and tainted by the financial collapse.

Instead of stepping aside, he fought back with a rare personal television interview, giving voters a glimpse of his human side and propping up his party's ratings.

His Independence party took 26.5 percent of the vote, giving it 19 seats in the 63-seat parliament. The Progressive Party collected 22 percent, winning 18 seats, while the ruling Social Democrats got 13.5 percent and 9 seats, according to results with over two-thirds of the vote counted.

Benediktsson's first task will be to form a coalition, although a tie-up with Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson's Progressive Party, an ally in several governments over the past three decades, is a widely expected outcome.

In a country where Nordic civility prevails, the president walks without security and members of parliament are listed in the phone book, coalitions are usually formed in just days.

"Historically two-party coalitions are the strongest and ... if you look at the (results board) the choice seems to be clear," Benediktsson said. "We'll go into coalition with whoever we can govern with."

The Independence Party has been part of every government between 1980 and 2009, presiding over the privatization of the banks, the financial sector's liberalization and its eventual demise.

Campaigning on a platform of tax cuts, it promised relief to households whose inflation-indexed mortgages have kept growing, despite several write-offs since the crash.

It also argued that foreign creditors of its failed banks, now locked into the country because of capital controls, will have to accept a massive write-off, perhaps as much as 75 percent, before they would be let out.

The write-off and the refinancing of other corporate debt, for example to Landsbanki and Reykjavik Energy, could let Iceland ease capital controls within 12 to 18 months, Benediktsson predicted.

Still, Gunnlaugsson was not yet ready to concede the premiership: "Sometimes the biggest party delegates the prime minister, sometimes not. We've seen all sort of governments."

DEMISE

The vote was also a de facto rejection of EU membership as staunchly independent-minded voters rejected the Social Democrats' argument that joining the block was the only way for long-term security.

With a population of just 320,000, Iceland became a European financial center 10 years ago when its liberalized banks borrowed heavily on ultra cheap overseas markets and lured British and Dutch savers with high returns.

Amassing assets worth more than ten times Iceland's GDP, Landsbanki, Kaupthing and Glitnir collapsed in quick succession, dragging the entire country into a financial abyss in October 2008.

The shiny Land Rovers that some Icelanders purchased, jokingly renamed 'Game Over,' were collected and taken offshore by enterprising Europeans, property prices tumbled, unemployment soared and the currency was only saved by capital controls that locked in foreign investors indefinitely.

The Social Democrats stabilized the economy with a bailout package hailed as exemplary by the IMF, but a series of policy blunders, tax hikes, leniency toward foreign creditors and their inability to deal with soaring household debt cost them popularity.

Leaden skies and driving sleet were a fair reflection of the mood of voters who have seen promises of a quick recovery fade, while mortgage debts rise, prices soar and capital controls keep investment at a record low. Turnout of 83.3 percent was the lowest since Iceland gained independence from Denmark in 1944.

"People seem to have a very short memory," Halldor Gudmundsson, 44, said after casting his ballot on Reykjavik's outskirts. "These are the parties that got us into the mess in the first place."

Like many voters, he has little faith in the ability of politicians to make a difference.

A recent Gallup poll showed that only 15 percent trust parliament, making it the second least-trusted institution after banks.

"There's so little room to maneuver and they promised so much, their popularity will be gone in three months," said Egill Helgason, a political commentator for the Icelandic national broadcaster RUV.

JPMorgan's co-operating chief to depart - WSJ

NEW YORK (Reuters) - JPMorgan's co-Chief Operating Officer Frank Bisignano plans to leave the U.S. bank giant, the latest top executive to depart in the past 1-1/2 years, the Wall Street Journal said its online edition on Sunday.

The departure is expected to be announced soon, the paper said, citing people close to the bank.

Matt Zames, current co-chief operating officer, will become COO of the firm, it said. Zames has been seen as a strong candidate to succeed JPMorgan Chief Executive and Chairman Jamie Dimon.

Bisignano is expected to announce as soon as Monday that he will join payment processing company First Data Corp as its chief executive, it added.

"The move leaves the giant New York bank without one of its fixers of operational problems at a time when the bank is wrestling with a number of regulatory headaches," it said.

JPMorgan suffered a loss of more than $6 billion due to soured trades. Regulators hit the bank in January with four enforcement actions requiring it to make a series of changes to risk management and anti-money-laundering systems.

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Chicago Bulls were down and just about out in this one. Go figure, Nate Robinson led them back.

Robinson scored 34 points, and Chicago wiped out a 14-point deficit late in regulation and beat the Brooklyn Nets 142-134 in triple overtime Saturday to take a 3-1 lead in the first-round playoff series.

The Bulls were trailing 109-95 in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter when Robinson went on one of his tears, carrying his team to an improbable victory with a stretch that reminded the streaky point guard of a video game.

"I always think I'm on fire, kind of like the old school game NBA Jam," he said. "You make a couple in a row, the rim's on fire. You shoot the ball, the ball's on fire. I feel like that at times ? all the time. Whenever I'm in the game, I just play with a lot of confidence. You kind of have to lie to yourself and feel like you can't miss."

There's the rub with Robinson.

He'll rush shots. He'll miss. He'll make his coach cringe and every Bulls fan groan, but then, he'll do something like this.

Robinson scored all but five of his points after the third quarter, including the first 12 in a 14-0 run that wiped out Brooklyn's late lead. Then, with 2 seconds left in the first overtime, he banked in a go-ahead jumper over Deron Williams.

Joe Johnson answered with one of his own to send it to another overtime, tied at 121. The Bulls had a chance to win in the closing seconds of the second extra session, but Joakim Noah was blocked, and the game went to a third OT.

The Bulls finally pulled away after Williams (32 points) drove for a layup to pull Brooklyn to 133-130 with 3 minutes left. The basket accounted for Williams' only points after regulation.

Luol Deng then scored to make it a five-point game, and Nazr Mohammed hit two shots in the final 32 seconds to help preserve the win.

He converted a jump hook, then grabbed the rebound and scored with 19 seconds left after Carlos Boozer made a free throw and missed the second, making it 140-134.

The Bulls will try to wrap up the best-of-seven series at Brooklyn on Monday. The Nets are going to have to dig deep to win three in a row after they wasted a prime chance to draw even and steal back home-court advantage.

Brooklyn was leading by 14 after a dunk by Gerald Wallace with 3:45 left in the fourth. C.J. Watson then stole the ball and was all alone for a breakaway dunk, but he missed.

Robinson nailed a 3 with 2:53 remaining, and that got the tying run started. Boozer finished it with a layup with about 55 seconds left.

Brook Lopez then hit two free throws, but the Bulls tied it again when Noah put back his own miss with 23 seconds left. Williams missed a jumper and Wallace had his layup blocked by Jimmy Butler with a second left, sending the game into overtime.

"We made a lot of mistakes up 14," Williams said. "It was so long ago, I can't remember what all went on. We had the missed dunk. Missed free throws. I fouled Nate on the 3. We made a lot of mistakes in the fourth quarter."

It looked as if the Bulls would win when Robinson banked in a runner off one foot over Williams with two seconds left in the first OT. But after a 20-second timeout, Johnson caught a pass at the top of the key and nailed a floater at the buzzer, sending it to double overtime.

The Bulls were leading 127-123 after Deng fed Noah for a dunk with 1:18 left in the second overtime, but Johnson quickly quieted the crowd with a three-point play.

Robinson then fouled out when he charged into Williams with just over a minute left. Lopez got fouled with 48.7 seconds left and made the first free throw to tie it at 127 before missing the second. Boozer got the rebound, but Deng missed a jumper with 30 seconds left.

Johnson then missed one for Brooklyn with about six seconds left. Noah was blocked by Lopez, the ball bouncing out of bounds, and the game went to a third overtime after the inbounds pass deflected off the Bulls center and hit the rim.

Robinson came close to missing the second half and overtimes altogether.

He and Watson got tangled up in the second quarter and went crashing into the scorers' table in the second quarter. They exchanged shoves, but the referees decided not to eject them.

Instead, they each got technicals and Robinson ? who was guarding Watson ? picked up a personal foul. But later, he perked up just as the Nets were ready to put this one away.

"I tease Coach (Tom Thibodeau) a lot because it seems like every shot I shoot he's mad," Robinson said, laughing. "At the same time, it's basketball. He does a great job of putting us in position to be successful."

When this is the result, Thibodeau will take it.

"He hit big shot after big shot," he said. "That's what makes him so valuable. We got him going and he had a great run. He just played a great game."

The Bulls also got a big performance from Kirk Hinrich, who finished with 18 points and 14 assists. Boozer scored 21, Jimmy Butler added 16, and Noah chipped in with 15 points and 13 rebounds. He also played more than 38 minutes even though Thibodeau had said he would be limited to about 25 to 30 because of the plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Williams hit the 30-point mark in a playoff game for the seventh time in his career and had 10 assists. Lopez added 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Johnson scored 22 despite being bothered lately by plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

"Honestly, this is definitely a game we let get away," Johnson said. "It's disappointing, but the series isn't over."

NOTES: Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo said before the game that he talked to Wallace about his role after the veteran forward wondered where he fit with the team. Wallace wasn't thrilled after sitting out the entire fourth quarter in Game 3. "Hopefully, we've done a better job of letting Gerald know the things that are important for him to do to help us be successful," Carlesimo said. ... Robinson's 34 points were the most ever in a playoff game by a Bulls reserve, and his 23 in the fourth were one shy of the club postseason record for any quarter. Michael Jordan scored 24 in the fourth at Philadelphia in Game 3 of the conference semifinals in 1990. ... The Bulls set franchise playoff records for points and made field goals (58).

(AP) ? Marc Gasol had 24 points and 13 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles Clippers 104-83 Saturday to even their first-round playoff series at 2-all.

Zach Randolph finished with 24 points and nine rebounds as the Grizzlies won their second straight to ensure another stop in Memphis for Game 6. Mike Conley had 15 points and 13 assists, and Tayshaun Prince scored 15 in his best game of the series.

Chris Paul and Blake Griffin had 19 points apiece for the Clippers, and Griffin also grabbed 10 rebounds. Los Angeles' reserves outscored its counterparts again, 43-16. But DeAndre Jordan was the only other starter to score for Los Angeles, and he had two points. Chauncey Billups and Caron Butler went a combined 0 for 10 from the floor in being shut out.

Game 5 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

The team that controls the boards has won each game of the series so far, with Memphis owning a 45-28 advantage in Game 4. That led to a 22-2 scoring difference in second-chance points, boosted by a 13-5 edge on offensive boards.

The Grizzlies used their prowess on the glass to beat the speedy Clippers when it came to fast-break points, 18-6.

Memphis' biggest advantage is its big men, and Randolph and Gasol each took turns helping the Grizzlies turn this into a best-of-three series.

Randolph had 16 points and seven rebounds in the first half as Memphis got off to a quick start, leading 33-25 after the first quarter. Gasol scored 18 in the second half, using an effective jumper to avoid the paint after picking up his third foul with 7:54 left in the third. Randolph got his third 7 seconds later.

It didn't matter.

The Clippers never lead by more than two, the last at 60-58 on a pair of free throws by Paul with 5:58 left in the third. Gasol then hit a 23-footer that beat the shot clock and made a pair of free throws to put Memphis ahead.

Ronny Turiaf's layup tied it for the sixth and final time. Gasol found Randolph for a layup that put Memphis ahead to stay at 64-62 on the 10th and final lead change with 3:21 left in the third.

Memphis blew it open with a 19-5 surge at the beginning of the fourth and went up as much as 20, the first on a drive by Quincy Pondexter with 3:45 left at 96-76. The Grizzlies outscored the Clippers 33-16 in the quarter and 55-36 for the half.

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro then subbed in from his bench with 3:02 remaining and had all his starters on the sideline for the final 2 minutes.

The Grizzlies set the tone from the start and led by as much as 12 in the first quarter. They went cold in the second when Paul scored nine of his 14 first-half points to help the Clippers to a 47-46 lead at halftime.

The Clippers wanted to be aggressive in what's been a physical series with lots of wrestling, especially between Randolph and Griffin. All the pounding appeared to take a toll in the second quarter as the Clippers had a chance to take their first lead only to have Griffin travel on back-to-back possessions. They couldn't even connect on a dunk as Prince tipped away a lob to Griffin.

Gasol was the key in the third. He even connected on a 23-foot jumper off an inbounds pass from Prince late in the shot clock. That tied it at 60 with 4:35 left and cranked new energy into the arena.

NOTES: Memphis improved to 17-1 when shooting at least 50 percent. ... The Grizzlies sold out their 12th straight postseason game. ... The Grizzlies played without veteran guard Keyon Dooling, who sat out with a strained muscle. ... Prince had only 10 points in the first three games combined. ... The Clippers shot 13 of 39 in the second half, compared to 20 for 35 for Memphis.

(AP) ? The Federal Aviation Administration said that the U.S. air traffic system will resume normal operations by Sunday evening after lawmakers rushed a bill through Congress allowing the agency to withdraw furloughs of air traffic controllers and other workers.

The FAA said Saturday that it has suspended all employee furloughs and that traffic facilities will begin returning to regular staffing levels over the next 24 hours. The furloughs were fallout from the $85 billion in automatic-across-the-board spending cuts this spring. The bill, passed on Friday, allows the FAA to move as much as $253 million within its budget to areas that will allow it to prevent reduced operations and staffing.

The furloughs started to hit air traffic controllers this past week, causing flight delays that left thousands of travelers frustrated and furious. Planes were forced to take off and land less frequently, so as not to overload the remaining controllers on duty.

The FAA had no choice but to cut $637 million as its share of $85 billion in automatic, government-wide spending cuts that must be achieved by the end of the federal budget year on Sept. 30.

Flight delays piled up across the country Sunday and Monday of this week as the FAA kept planes on the ground because there weren't enough controllers to monitor busy air corridors. Cascading delays held up flights at some of nation's busiest airports, including New York, Baltimore and Washington. Delta Air Lines canceled about 90 flights Monday because of worries about delays. Just about every passenger was rebooked on another Delta flight within a couple of hours. Air travel was smoother Tuesday.

Things could have been worse. A lot of people who had planned to fly this week changed their plans when they heard that air travel might be difficult, according to longtime aviation consultant Daniel Kasper of Compass Lexicon.

"Essentially what happened from an airline's perspective is that people who were going to travel didn't travel," he said. But canceled flights likely led to lost revenue for airlines. Even if they didn't have to incur some of costs of fueling up planes and getting them off the ground, crews that were already scheduled to work still had to paid.

"One week isn't going to kill them, but had it gone on much longer, it would have been a significant hit on their revenues and profits," Kasper said.

It's also a toll on travelers. At New York's LaGuardia airport on Friday, traveler Roger Bentley said "getting on a flight and being delayed really puts people on the spot. It puts people on the edge and makes people edgy and that's not something I want."

The challenges this week probably cost airlines less than disruptions from a typical winter storm, said John F. Thomas, an aviation consultant with L.E.K. Consulting.

"I think the fact that it got resolved this week has minimized the cost as it was more the inconvenience factor," Thomas said.

The budget cuts at the FAA were required under a law enacted two years ago as the government was approaching its debt limit. Democrats were in favor of raising the debt limit without strings attached so as not to provoke an economic crisis, but Republicans insisted on substantial cuts in exchange. The compromise was to require that every government "program, project and activity" ? with some exceptions, like Medicare ? be cut equally.

The FAA had reduced the work schedules of nearly all of its 47,000 employees by one day every two weeks, including 15,000 air traffic controllers, as well as thousands of air traffic supervisors, managers and technicians who keep airport towers and radar facility equipment working. That amounted to a 10 percent cut in hours and pay.

Republicans accused the Obama administration of forcing the furloughs to raise public pressure on Congress to roll back the budget cuts. Critics of the FAA insist the agency could have reduce its budget in other ways that would not have inconvenience travelers including diverting money from other accounts, such as those devoted to research, commercial space transportation and modernization of the air traffic control computers.

President Barack Obama chided lawmakers Saturday over their fix for widespread flight delays, deeming it an irresponsible way to govern, dubbing it a "Band-Aid" and a quick fix, rather than a lasting solution to the spending cuts known as the sequester.

"Republicans claimed victory when the sequester first took effect, and now they've decided it was a bad idea all along," Obama said, singling out the GOP even though the bill passed with overwhelming Democratic support in both chambers.

He scolded lawmakers for helping the Federal Aviation Administration while doing nothing to replace other cuts that he said harm federal employees, unemployed workers and preschoolers in Head Start.

Relationships - Emotional Affair Recovery - 3 Lingering Bad Habits ...

While one of the introductory steps to physical or emotional affair recovery as the injured spouse is dealing with your negative emotions, it is imperative that your spouse stops this affair as soon as possible. In this article, we are talking about recovering from emotional affairs(the type without sexual activity) in particular. The following three points, are bad traits that he/she needs to cut completely, otherwise the affair is pretty much going on in some form.

1) Communication With The Other Individual Is Of Higher Priority

At least the worst hasn't come to pass, since this type of affair doesn't entail sexual contact between your spouse and the paramour. Your marriage is not immune to this possibility however. Especially when your spouse keeps talking to this individual, and connecting with them in a way that they should be talking and connecting with you. It is a gut-wrenching ordeal, finding out that your spouse is starting to develop feelings toward another individual, as the reason for them having a sudden emotional disconnect with you. Something that must be dealt with.

2) Devoting Less Time To You In Favor Of Their "Friendship"

Your spouse may go to great lengths to mask the length of time he/she devotes to this other person, in relation to the time they spend with you. They (your husband/wife) understand the repercussions of bringing this emotional affair out in the open. In some cases, in the early stages, your spouse may speak about this individual innocently, but not anymore once the emotional relationship develops. Honesty, trust, respect, loyalty, and transparency has now been breached. These things will no doubt, take some time to bounce back from while going through the emotional affair recovery process.

3) Shielding The Other Individual While Your Marriage Takes a Licking

You have a big problem to emotional affair recovery, if your spouse is being defensive of the other person, and is singling you out as the bad guy. They (your spouse) will try to make the situation look like it is your fault. Obviously, your spouse is just looking for a reason to create further rifts in your marriage, so they can further their emotional affair aspirations. Your spouse must overcome this.

- Knowing How to Survive Emotional Infidelity -

Communication between you and your spouse can help to get things back to the way they used to be, when your marriage was in happier times. A crucial aspect that is mandatory for healing your marriage.

There must be greater transparency in your marriage from here on. It may be one of the toughest things you've ever done as a married couple, but you all need to sit down and come to a compromise, on what level of interaction is okay and what is clearly forbidden. It goes without saying that these discussions with your spouse may create further tension, if it isn't done the right way.

Novel approach to find RNAs involved in long-term memory storage

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Despite decades of research, relatively little is known about the identity of RNA molecules that are transported as part of the molecular process underpinning learning and memory.

Now, working together, scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), Columbia University and the University of Florida, Gainesville, have developed a novel strategy for isolating and characterizing a substantial number of RNAs transported from the cell-body of neuron (nerve cell) to the synapse, the small gap separating neurons that enables cell to cell communication.

Using this new method, the scientists were able to identify nearly 6,000 transcripts (RNA sequences) from the genome of Aplysia, a sea slug widely used in scientific investigation.

The scientists' target is known as the synaptic transcriptome -- roughly the complete set of RNA molecules transported from the neuronal cell body to the synapse.

In the study, published recently in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists focused on the RNA transport complexes that interact with the molecular motor kinesin; kinesin proteins move along filaments known as microtubules in the cell and carry various gene products during the early stage of memory storage.

While neurons use active transport mechanisms such as kinesin to deliver RNA cargos to synapses, once they arrive at their synaptic destination that service stops and is taken over by other, more localized mechanisms -- in much the same way that a traveler's bags gets handed off to the hotel doorman once the taxi has dropped them at the entrance.

The scientists identified thousands of these unique sequences of both coding and noncoding RNAs. As it turned out, several of these RNAs play key roles in the maintenance of synaptic function and growth.

The scientists also uncovered several antisense RNAs (paired duplicates that can inhibit gene expression), although what their function at the synapse might be remains unknown.

"Our analyses suggest that the transported RNAs are surprisingly diverse," said Sathya Puthanveettil, a TSRI assistant professor who designed the study. "It also brings up an important question of why so many different RNAs are transported to synapses. One reason may be that they are stored there to be used later to help maintain long-term memories."

The team's new approach offers the advantage of avoiding the dissection of neuronal processes to identify synaptically localized RNAs by focusing on transport complexes instead, Puthanveettil said. This new approach should help in better understanding changes in localized RNAs and their role in local translation as molecular substrates, not only in memory storage, but also in a variety of other physiological conditions, including development.

"New protein synthesis is a prerequisite for maintaining long term memory," he said, "but you don't need this kind of transport forever, so it raises many questions that we want to answer. What molecules need to be synthesized to maintain memory? How long is this collection of RNAs stored? What localized mechanisms come into play for memory maintenance? "

In addition to Puthanveettil, who was the first author of the study, authors of "A Strategy to Capture and Characterize the Synaptic Transcriptome," include Igor Antonov, Sergey Kalchikov, Priyamvada Rajasethupathy, Yun-Beom Choi, Maxime Kinet, Irina Morozova, James J. Russo, and Jingyue Ju of Columbia University; Kevin A. Karl of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; and Eric R. Stilt walker trekking around Michigan for charity

ANN ARBOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) ? Neil Sauter (SAW'-ter) walks 9 feet off the ground. But he's more concerned with distance than height these days.

Sauter plans to trek 400 miles across his home state during the next month as part of an effort to raise money for the United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan nonprofit.

The 29-year-old Deerfield resident has mild cerebral palsy.

His "Walk for No Limits" kicked off April 12 in Ann Arbor. His journey is scheduled to end May 19, not far from his southern Michigan home.

Five years ago, Sauter stilt-walked 830 miles across the state and raised about $85,000 in the process. This time, he's looking to walk less and raise more.

Sauter says that when he looks back, he's "going to be really proud of these trips."

Microwave imaging can see how well treatment is progressing

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Microwave imaging can be used to monitor how well treatment for breast cancer is working, finds new research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Breast Cancer Research. Microwave tomography was able to distinguish between breast cancer, benign growths, and normal tissue.

Eight women with breast cancer were treated with chemotherapy until surgery, as part of their normal therapy. During treatment, magnetic resonance image was supplemented with microwave tomography at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Regions of high conductivity corresponded to the tumors, low conductivity to normal tissues, and unlike other imaging techniques, body mass index (indicating the amount of body fat), age or breast density did not appear to affect the results.

This imaging technique is low cost and can be repeated at numerous stages during treatment. Paul Meaney from Dartmouth College, who led the study explained, "By recalling patients for scans during their treatment we found that we could actually see tumors shrinking in women who responded to chemotherapy. Microwave tomography could therefore be used to identify women who are not responding to initial therapy and their treatment changed appropriately at an early stage."

Dogtopia Continues Strong Growth in California ... - Franchising.com

Leading Dog Daycare Franchise Seeking Franchisees Throughout the Region

April 23, 2013 // Franchising.com // TYSONS CORNER, Va. - Dogtopia, a leading national dog daycare and spa franchise, and Thomas Franchise Solutions announced today that they have signed a second regional developer (RD) agreement in California within 30 days and awarded the Orange County, Calif. region to Jan Folk . A seasoned entrepreneur and philanthropist, Folk is the founder of the Orange Dog Foundation, a charity started in Canada that orchestrates "Freedom Flights" transporting abandoned puppies to new homes.

Folk will develop the Orange County region and is now seeking select franchisees to own and operate 13 new Dogtopia locations throughout the area. Target cities for development include Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Seal Beach and Anaheim. Opportunities are available to convert existing dog daycare and boarding facilities to the Dogtopia brand, as well as target key real estate opportunities for new locations throughout Orange County.

"Dogtopia was a natural fit for me because of my years of rescuing dogs in Orange County," said Folk. "I share Dogtopia's dedication to pet charities, as well as passion for community involvement. The company's proven business model and experienced leadership team result in a smart, sustainable investment opportunity for franchisees."

As the company's second RD, Folk is part of Dogtopia's aggressive growth strategy to expand its brand to more than 400 locations across the U.S. and Canada over the next seven years. In October 2012, the company entered into a strategic partnership with Thomas Franchise Solutions, Ltd. (TFS), an investment firm dedicated to guiding and growing select unique franchise concepts. This partnership, as well as the opportunities she saw in the $52 billion U.S. pet industry, attracted Folk to Dogtopia.

"Dogtopia is experiencing solid growth momentum in California with the signing of our second RD and we are confident that our brand has tremendous potential for success across the state," said Amy Nichols, CEO of Dogtopia. "Jan's entrepreneurial spirit, coupled with her passion for animals, makes her an ideal candidate to strategically expand Dogtopia in Orange County and we are looking forward to adding new franchisees to our system."

Since Dogtopia launched in 2002, it has grown to 23 franchise and four company-owned locations nationwide, as well as five locations currently in development. Dogtopia's design mirrors that of a chic, upscale spa. Laid out in a similar manner as a children's daycare facility, Dogtopia has multiple playrooms to suit every dog's personality and size. In addition to daycare and boarding, many Dogtopia locations also offer a spa, self-service dog wash, and a boutique to pamper dogs of all shapes and sizes.

To fuel growth, Dogtopia is now seeking regional developers to expand the brand in major metropolitan areas, including Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, and South Florida. Additionally, British Columbia and Alberta are key target markets in Canada. Candidates should have an affinity for dogs and the skills to grow a successful business within a proven franchise model. Regional developers will be required to open at least one store within the first year of signing then develop additional stores during a scheduled development period, either by opening and operating more units themselves or by recruiting franchisees for their region.

For more information regarding Dogtopia franchise opportunities in Orange County, contact Jan Folk at jfolk1@vzw.blackberry.net or 714-913-7250, or Christy Thom at 714-290-2744.

Women shot at during LA manhunt get $4.2M settlement

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The city of Los Angeles reached a $4.2 million settlement with two women who were injured when police mistakenly opened fire on them during the manhunt for disgruntled ex-cop Christopher Dorner, an official said Tuesday.

City Attorney Carmen Trutanich announced the sum to KNBC-TV Los Angeles, and an attorney representing the women confirmed the amount to The Associated Press.

The settlement must still be approved by the Los Angeles City Council.

Margie Carranza and her 71-year-old mother, Emma Hernandez, were delivering papers around 5 a.m. on Feb. 7 when LAPD officers guarding the Torrance home of a target named in an online Dorner manifesto blasted at least 100 rounds at their pickup.

Hernandez was shot in the back and Carranza had minor injuries.

The settlement means they cannot pursue any future injury claims against the city.

Dorner had vowed warfare on Los Angeles Police Department officers and their families for what he called an unfair firing.

He killed four people, including two law enforcement officers, during his nearly one-week run from authorities.

Attorney Glen Jonas, who represents the women, called the settlement amount fair and said it spared the city from defending a case that involved eight police officers and would have likely cost millions of dollars.

"The only certainty was the litigation was going to cost everyone a lot of money and a lot of time," Jonas said.

Jonas sent a nine-page demand to the city more than a month ago that provided an opening to negotiations. He said he negotiated with Trutanich for weeks before the deal was reached on Monday night.

"We're two veteran trial lawyers trying to settle a case, and we both understand the reality of litigation and what it costs to both sides," Jonas said.

The women agreed to receive the payment after June 30 ? the end of the fiscal year ? to help the city with its budgeting. The agreement came in addition to a separate $40,000 settlement reached earlier for the loss of the women's pickup truck.

"For them, the money is not the issue as much as (the city) just doing the right thing," Jonas said. "Everyone agreed that they were wronged, but we didn't know whether responsibility would be assumed ... It's pleasant to get that done without having to go through years of litigation."

The eight officers remain assigned to non-field duties pending an internal investigation.
