The Inventive Translations of Mary Sidney Herbert

English writer and poet Mary Herbert, nee Sidney, Countess of Pembroke. Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke

It's hard to imagine a modern family as prominent in as many ways as Philip Sidney and his sister, Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke were. In addition to the social and political prominence of the Kennedys and the wealth of the Kochs, beyond their personal glamour and estates and Philip Sidney's heroism in war, the brother and sister were at the center of scholarship and art?two realms that were less separated in their time than in the present.

Philip Sidney's Astrophel and Stella, in its pirated, posthumous edition of 1591, set off the sonnet vogue of the 1590s, which saw many dozens of imitative sequences, including the one by William Shakespeare. Mary Sidney, proficient in Latin and ancient Greek as well as modern European languages, was a brilliant translator as well as a writer in prose and verse. Active as a patron of the arts and a host to artists, she was the center of a circle that included, in addition to her brother, poets Michael Drayton, Edward Dyer, Fulke Greville, and Edmund Spenser.

Her translations of the Psalms (continuing a project of her brother's, after his death) are said to have influenced, in a following generation, her cousin once removed George Herbert and John Donne.

Anthologists, eager to compensate for patriarchal societies, sometimes appear to scrape up women for inclusion in their books. No apology is required for Mary Herbert's accomplished, inventive work as a translator. Her version of ?Psalm 52? uses rhyme? that barbarous, jangly departure from classical dignity?as part of an angry, urgent music. Interestingly, ?Psalm 52? denounces those who are great and prominent, but false: a phenomenon that the Countess of Pembroke was well placed to observe.

Her version is less compact than the other great translation of her time, and more performative. The King James prose version has the force of simplicity and compression, a clinching denunciation. Mary Herbert makes the psalm into more of a song: an inspired rant, extravagant yet disciplined. (In her final line, ?annoy? has become a weaker word in contemporary English than its root, which indicated hatred.) Comparing and appreciating the two translations, prose and poetry and appreciating both, can be a lesson in writing.

By Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke

Tyrant, why swell'st thou thus,
? ? Of mischief vaunting?
Since help from God to us
? ? Is never wanting.

Lewd lies thy tongue contrives,
? ? Loud lies it soundeth;
Sharper than sharpest knives
? ? With lies it woundeth.

Falsehood thy wit approves,
? ? All truth rejected:
Thy will all vices loves,
? ? Virtue neglected.

Not words from cursed thee,
? ? But gulfs are poured;
Gulfs wherein daily be
? ? Good men devoured.

Think'st thou to bear it so?
? ? God shall displace thee;
God shall thee overthrow,
? ? Crush thee, deface thee.

The just shall fearing see
? ? These fearful chances,
And laughing shoot at thee
? ? With scornful glances.

Lo, lo, the wretched wight,
? ? Who God disdaining,
His mischief made his might,
? ? His guard his gaining.

I as an olive tree
? ? Still green shall flourish:
God's house the soil shall be
? ? My roots to nourish.

My trust in his true love
? ? Truly attending,
Shall never thence remove,
? ? Never see ending.

Thee will I honour still,
? ? Lord, for this justice;
There fix my hopes I will
? ? Where thy saints' trust is.

Thy saints trust in thy name,
? ? Therein they joy them:
Protected by the same,
? ? Naught can annoy them.

Small Businesses Source Top Talent with Social Recruiting : topic ...

Small-business owners are embracing social networking, not just for marketing their products and services, but to recruit top talent. Likewise, job seekers are increasingly turning to LinkedIn, Twitter and even Facebook to land new roles.

From the employer?s perspective, social networks are taking on a new form as valuable resources for finding skilled professionals who may not be actively seeking new employment. According to Jobvite?s 2012 Social Recruiting Survey, 92 percent of recruiters are using, or plan to use, social recruiting in the near future. Among those who do, 43 percent report an increase in candidate quality.

Earning an Internship?

Planit, a full-service marketing communications agency based in Baltimore, decided to capitalize on social media to recruit its next round of interns. Candidates competed for four coveted internships by submitting videos and other materials, showcasing their talents to the company?s Facebook page. The public was allowed to vote, and the top vote-getter earned a final interview along with four other candidates. In total, four interns were hired.

Caitlin Mills, Director of PR and Social, said the project was a perfect fit for Planit given the nature of the business and the company?s culture: Fun, creative and innovative.

?We knew that our target demographic consists of avid social users, so it made sense for us to evaluate them in their own environment,? Mills explains. ?Planit is big on culture, it's what makes our company so unique. It's important for us to enhance our team with members who share our values, and this project helped us identify candidates we knew would be a great fit with our current team: Dedicated, driven and fun.?

Demonstrating Social Skills

Planit also took advantage of the opportunity to evaluate candidates? social networking prowess. Because social campaigns are a big part of the company?s service offerings, they wanted interns who could demonstrate social media expertise. The nature of the application process helped Planit identify those candidates who were truly comfortable with the medium.

The project also resulted in follower growth on Planit?s social platforms. The company?s Facebook fan count jumped from 1,400 to 3,500 from the project?s inception to its end, an increase of 147 percent. Candidates received a total of 5,700 votes in just three weeks; the company?s total reach jumped by 1,000 percent, reaching 34,000 people each week.

Planit's intern contest was administered using a Facebook application.

Planit makes a point to mention all open positions on its social channels before a formal job post ever goes up, a tactic they?ve had great success with. In fact, both Mills and Kelsey Reck, Planit?s social media strategist in charge of executing the intern project, found out about their positions on social sites. Overall, about 25 percent of the company?s current employees first heard about their positions on a social platform.

Scrapping the Want Ad

Small-business owners don?t always have the time to post job openings and sort through dozens of resumes. For that reason, many turn to recruiters to find the best candidates, even before actively advertising a position. Savvy recruiters have developed methods for using social platforms to identify and reach out to highly qualified candidates.

Mark Moyer, Principal of Compass Points Advisors, LLC, has spent the past 23 years working as an executive recruiter serving the financial services industry, and he?s adapted his methods over time for a competitive edge as hiring practices change. Moyer uses LinkedIn almost exclusively to source candidates using a defined process that he?s developed over many years.

Moyer?s social media strategy is different than many; he doesn?t set out to rack up as many contacts as he can. Instead, he?s very careful about choosing his connections, primarily focusing on attorneys, risk managers and other high-level executives working in the financial services industry. Moyer says this makes his communication more impactful, ?I don?t actively make open posts of positions I?m looking to fill. When I reach out to an individual because I feel they?re a good fit or might know someone who is, it makes a bigger impact because I?m taking a targeted approach.?

Many companies will simply post a job opening, wait for the resumes to roll in and select a candidate from that pool. But this reactive approach means you could be missing out on the best candidate who may not be actively looking, but would be willing to jump ship for the right opportunity. Moyer prefers not to post openings at all.?Even if he doesn?t find the perfect candidate within his own network, LinkedIn?s search feature helps him find other qualified candidates. He then sends a connection request to that person along with a personalized note. Moyer says these candidates almost always accept his request.

Unlike Planit, whose target candidates skewed to the younger generation, Moyer is generally searching for white-collar professionals with years of industry experience. Therefore, he sticks to LinkedIn as his primary social recruiting tool, although he does make a point to check candidates? other social networks for a broad overview of the candidate?s personality and extracurricular activities.

Time-Saving Tools

The prospect of recruiting via social media may still seem daunting to the small-business owner already wearing five other hats, but new tools are emerging to simplify the process for the time-pressed small business.

Ovation is a social recruiting platform that automates the job posting process and provides a single interface for viewing and sorting applications. Karen Droz, President of Ovation, says the platform was designed to help small businesses identify the best matches for a position using a unique star-rating system that scores each application based on the parameters set by the hiring company.

Ovation allows users to post ads simultaneously across numerous websites, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Craigslist and Indeed.com. Droz says, ?From a hiring employer?s point of view, employee referrals, contacts and networking have always been the most effective way to hire good people. Social media is replacing standard networking and making it exponentially larger as each contact spreads the word to their connections, and so forth.?

Ovation rates each application on a five-star rating scale, allowing hiring companies to target those with the best match without manually reading dozens of applications. Because the company offers mobile applications as well, hiring managers can instantly see what candidates have applied and respond immediately. It?s also possible to set up automated responses, such as a brief message thanking a candidate for an application, to eliminate the need for manual responses.

Droz says customers have received more than 75 applications within 15 minutes of posting an ad to Craigslist.? ?Hiring is daunting and distracts owners from their core business. Many don?t have the time or expertise to sort through the hiring process. Ovation makes it simpler, allowing companies to reach a really broad labor market in a fraction of the time, and helping to rank the best qualified candidates.?

Social recruiting can boost follower counts and brand awareness.

As social recruiting continues to replace traditional methods of networking, small-business owners will be developing methods to capitalize on the ability to reach hundreds or thousands of potential candidates within minutes. Whether you take a proactive or reactive approach to the hiring process, social media provides ample opportunities to find the best talent with the added benefit of boosting social exposure for your business.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Seventh-grader Samantha Bertolino was especially proud of her Halloween costume this year. She was going to be a vampire, and she really had it together this time: The black dress, the spider-web earrings, fake blood, white face paint, and some cool, sparkly clip-on nails.

But the costume will stay in the closet for a while: Samantha's town of Ridgefield, Conn., has postponed Halloween due to the ravages of Superstorm Sandy. The town is planning to reschedule, pending the success of cleanup efforts.

But it won't be the same, Samantha says: "It's kind of like trying to reschedule Christmas. You can't really do that."

From the wrath of nature to the wrath of young children: From Maryland to Kentucky to Maine, Halloween festivities were being canceled or postponed. And a debate emerged: Should we be celebrating, anyway, in the face of the devastation? Or is celebrating just the right thing to do for antsy kids who've been cooped up at home (and out of school) for days?

Perhaps the most high-profile postponement was that of New York's huge parade in Greenwich Village, with its outlandish floats and millions of revelers, mainly adults. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city's police were simply too taxed with Sandy's aftermath. (Trick-or-treating, the mayor said, could go ahead as long as caution and good judgment were used.)

It was the first time the parade had been canceled in its 39-year history, said Jeanne Fleming, who has directed the event for 32 of those years, including this one. (Also being canceled was a much-loved parade in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn.)

"We went on right after 9/11," said Fleming. "It was a wonderful affirmation of New York's spirit." Still, she added, she understood the factors that went into Bloomberg's decision.

"Even after 9/11, people had electricity, the subways were running," she said. "And I do wonder if it would have been the right thing for the people of Greenwich Village." Much of lower Manhattan below 39th street is still plunged in darkness.

Fleming was spending Wednesday in discussions about a possible new date next week; options mentioned were Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, she said, which presented another complication: "I can imagine people staying up all night watching election returns, and then having a parade," she noted.

Speaking of the election, President Barack Obama and wife Michelle were also changing plans, breaking their three-year tradition of passing out sweets to area students and military children in the White House driveway.

The White House said the hundreds of treat bags, each containing a box of White House M&Ms, a pumpkin-shaped sugar cookie, jelly beans and some dried fruit, would be delivered to the White House Military Office and D.C., Maryland and Virginia school districts.

For some communities, the rescheduling compounded past disappointments. In Ridgefield, Halloween was postponed last year, too, due to an early snowstorm that brought down trees and caused widespread power outages. As was trick-or-treating in Londonderry, N.H., which also rescheduled this year.

"They were very sad," said Cheryl Hass, a Londonderry mom, of her daughters, ages 8 and 10. "Once you explain why, they understand, but they're still disappointed."

Since dates for a rescheduled Halloween varied by city, county or town, some parents were mollifying their kids by promising dual (or triple) celebrations.

One was Kelsey Banfield of Fairfield, Conn., who lost power and relocated to her parents' house in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Tuesday. She said her 4-year-old daughter would celebrate there and then on Nov. 7, back home.

Also planning some double-dipping was Amber Korell of Greensboro, Md., where trick-or-treating was set for Friday. Korell said she'd told her 4-year-old daughter, Layla, that they'd also hit the town of nearby Denton, which was celebrating on Saturday; that way, she'd get to wear her costume twice.

In many places, like the upper part of Manhattan, where power was never lost, trick-or-treating was largely going ahead, even though school wasn't: Bloomberg announced Wednesday that schools would be closed the rest of the week, much to the delight of children and the frustration of parents.

In New Jersey, though, which sustained much damage, Gov. Chris Christie postponed Halloween until next Monday ? though not all towns were necessarily keeping to that schedule. One building, a condo in the flooded city of Hoboken, was getting in a little early celebrating ? at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Kathy Zucker, the condo president, said she had three children under the age of 6.

"They are going a little stir crazy," she said.

Of course, adults who were going stir crazy and looking for kid-inappropriate entertainment had additional options ? especially in New York. For example, there was the off-Broadway show "Silence," a profane and hilarious send-up of the movie "Silence of the Lambs." The show was offering a "Halloween package" involving dinner, the show and a haunted house tour.

And if you like drag costumes, there was the Halloween Drag Costume party at the Christie's exhibition gallery, celebrating an upcoming sale of Andy Warhol works. The private (sorry) party described the dress code as "Factory Chic, Halloween Drag."

Back to more family friendly activities: Some towns offered alternatives to trick-or-treating. The well-known aquarium in Mystic, Conn., offered families without power at home the chance to trick-or-treat among the beluga whales, penguins and sharks.

And the city of Brunswick, Ohio, south of Cleveland, was holding an free indoor "Frankenstorm Party" at the local recreation center, to complement trick-or-treating outside.

"It's an alternative if they don't want to go out in the weather," said Diane Grabowski, an assistant to the parks and recreation director.

While some parents felt that celebrating just wasn't the right thing to do when people had suffered as a result of the storm, others felt the postponement was unnecessary.

"It's Halloween and the weather's not that bad," said Mandy Haynoski of Wellsville, in western New York. "So why not have trick-or-treating as normal?" Though the town came through the storm with relatively few problems, officials decided to postpone Halloween until Sunday afternoon.

"What's trick-or-treating without being out at night with the Halloween lights and the pumpkins lit up?" Haynoski asked. "It's just more fun on Halloween." Not to mention, she added, the Buffalo Bills-Houston Texans football game Sunday, which now coincides with Halloween.

"Nobody's going to answer their doors when the football game's going on," she said.

PFT: 100 percent back? Peyton's not buying it

hi-res-82908660_crop_exactGetty Images

With most of the attention focusing on the storm that?s bearing down on the East Coast, the legal storm fueled by the bounty case still won?t go away.? In Louisiana, Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma has filed his final legal brief in support of the effort to oust former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue as the new bounty appeal hearing officer.

The brief, a copy of which PFT has obtained, doesn?t contain anything new from a legal or factual standpoint.? The players continue to believe that Tagliabue has a conflict of interest via his employment with the league?s primary outside law firm, his direct ongoing employment with the league, and his possible status as a witness.? The NFL believes that the labor deal gives Commissioner Roger Goodell the ability to hand the baton to Taliabue, and that the league has the ability to waive any potential conflicts of interest Tagliabue may have.

The larger question, as one league source posed it recently, is why the players weren?t willing to try their luck with Tagliabue?? He?s regarded as someone who would be fair, and who wouldn?t feel compelled to agree with Goodell.

But as another source put it, ?fair? is a relative term.? ?I personally think he would be as fair as he could be,? the source said, ?but the question is how fair is that and is that really impartial.? Is he capable of that given his position??

Even though the NFLPA has agreed to allow the Commissioner or his designee to handle these appeals, federal law entitles both sides to an impartial arbitrator.? It will be for Judge Helen Berrigan to decide whether Tagliabue fits that description, given his connection to the NFL and the law firm of Covington & Burling.

(AP) ? Syrian fighter jets pounded rebel areas across the country on Monday with scores of airstrikes that anti-regime activists called the most widespread bombing in a single day since Syria's troubles started 19 months ago.

The death toll for what was supposed to be a four-day cease-fire between the regime of President Bashar Assad and rebels seeking his overthrow exceeded 500, and activists guessed the government's heavy reliance on air power reflected its inability to roll back rebel gains.

"The army is no longer able to make any progress on the ground so it is resorting to this style," said activist Hisham Nijim via Skype from the northern town of Khan Sheikhoun.

Activists said more than 80 people were killed nationwide Monday while videos posted online showed fighter jets screaming over Syrian towns, mushroom clouds rising from neighborhoods and residents searching the remains of damaged and collapsed buildings for bodies. One video from Maaret al-Numan in the north showed residents trying to save a boy who was buried up to his shoulders in rubble. Another showed the dead bodies of a young boy and girl laid out on a tile floor.

The airstrikes focused on rebel areas in the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, as well as on restive areas in and around the capital Damascus. The regime has been bombing rebel areas in the north for months, but had sparingly used its air force near the capital, presumably to avoid isolating its supporters there.

But analysts say that rampant defections and rising rebel capabilities have lessened the regime's ability to take back and hold rebel areas, making air strikes its most effective way to fight back.

Monday was supposed to be the fourth and final day of an internationally sanctioned cease-fire to coincide with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest periods of the Muslim calendar. But violence marred the truce almost immediately after it was to go into effect on Friday and continued apace through the weekend.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday he was "deeply disappointed" that the warring parties didn't respect the cease-fire and called on the divided international community to unite to stop the bloodshed.

"As long as the international community remains at odds, the needs, attacks and suffering will only grow," he told reporters in South Korea.

Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League and presented the plan, told reporters in Moscow that he'd keep trying to lessen the violence and "put an end to it."

World powers remain divided on how to stop Syria's crisis, with the U.S. and many Arab and European nations calling for Assad to step down while Russia, China and Iran continue to back the regime. But with the sides largely stalemated on the battlefield and little international appetite for military intervention, few expect the war to end soon.

Anti-regime activist say more than 35,000 people have been killed since the anti-Assad uprising started in March 2011.

The holiday cease-fire was the first international effort in months to try to stop the violence, and it accomplished little.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles daily death tolls based on contacts inside Syria, said more than 500 people had been killed during the four-day holiday. It said more than 80 people were killed Monday and that the number was likely to rise further. Prior to the holiday, about 150 people were reported dead each day.

But in a change, Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Observatory, said the number of airstrikes spiked on Monday.

"Today has seen the most intense air raids across Syria since the start of the uprising," he said, estimating there were more than 60 airstrikes nationwide by early afternoon.

He said the airstrikes sought to compensate for recent regime losses on the ground.

Muhieddine Lathkani, a London-based member of the Syrian National Council opposition group, said the air attacks were a result of the regime's "total despair" and reflected the military's inability to recapture rebel areas.

Among the hardest hit areas was the northern town of Maaret al-Numan, which rebels seized earlier this month only to face heavy retaliation from the military. Amateur videos posted online Monday showed dozens of men combing through huge swaths of rubble, occasionally finding wounded people covered in cement dust and carrying them off for treatment.

Other videos showed fighter jets screaming through the sky and dropping bombs over Damascus suburbs including Yabroud, Hazza and Harasta.

Videos from the poor neighborhood of Hajar al-Aswad in south Damascus showed what activists said were people killed by regime shelling. One video showed a dead family of five, all wrapped in blankets. Others showed three dead bodies in a small bus and the bodies of two young children laid out on a floor.

Activist videos could not be independently verified due to reporting restrictions in Syria, but they appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting on the events depicted.

Also Monday, a car bomb exploded in the Damascus suburb of Jarmana, knocking balconies off of residential buildings and sending firemen rushing to fight the blaze, according to TV footage. The state news agency SANA said 11 people were killed and 67 wounded. The Observatory said five people were killed.

SANA also reported a second car bomb in the area later Monday but did not give a number of the dead and wounded.

In Turkey, about 150 members of the Syrian opposition met Monday to discuss how to manage rebel-held areas and plan for a post-Assad future.

Abdelbaset Sieda, president of the Syrian National Council, said the Syrian regime was losing its grip on power and that the opposition must be prepared to rebuild the devastated country.

Since the start of the uprising, the Syrian opposition has failed to come up with a united leadership and has been riddled by disagreements between numerous factions over the role of Islam in the uprising, the best way to topple Assad and other issues.

Exile opposition leaders also have no control over and limited communication with many rebel brigades fighting inside the country.

Headbutt double knockout? Headbutt double knockout (VIDEO)

Double knockouts are already uncommon in MMA, but one happened in Poland over the weekend that is even more rare. Marcin Mencel and Mateusz Zawadzki headbutted each other, and their fight ended in a technical draw.

In case you weren't sure, that's why headbutts aren't allowed in MMA.

Who Do You Complain To About Your Relationship? | Black and ...

I have never really been one of those really big complainers. I normally go with the flow and look for the silver lining in even my most challenging of situations. However, life and relationships always bring certain circumstances into our existence that drives even the best of us into complaint mode. Going into detail about something we were disappointed about is natural. But knowing who to have these conversations with is what?s most important.

When sharing our lives with another person it is almost a guarantee that they, at some point, are going to drive us absolutely crazy. On occasion their bad habits are going to feel unbearable. They are going to say or do something we don?t like or we?re going to be of the opinion that they have not considered our feelings. Various events will take place during the course of a relationship to stretch us, challenge us, and yes provide a reason to complain.

But before we run off to grumble we must take each of the following into consideration:

The thing we want to whine about can actually be resolved if we simply communicate it to our partner. We must be willing to turn complaint mode into solution thinking.

If we still feel the urge to vent, we must be careful in selecting the person with whom we will share. This person should be trustworthy, honest, values marriage and truly loves us. Unfortunately, not everyone in our lives is rooting for our marriage success. Once we determine who those individuals are we make a mental note and are mindful of the information we share with that person.

Take a deep breath and meditate over the situation prior to sharing it with someone other than your spouse. Enjoying our alone time in a quiet and peaceful space allows us to completely clear our minds in order to regroup and refocus.

Asking ourselves what we stand to gain by complaining is an instant eye opener. We immediately see that we don?t normally feel any better as a result. So why even waste our time.

As we continue on this life and relationship journey we can?t lose sight of what is truly important. Being loved and giving love is what most of us seek. The focus should be on what is working in our relationships and adding more of that instead of focusing on what isn?t working without creating a realistic solution.

BMWK family, who do you?complain?to about your relationship? Has complaining to others ever backfired on you?

Explosion strikes north Nigeria Catholic church

KADUNA, Nigeria (AP) ? A suicide car bomber detonated his explosives Sunday at a Catholic church holding Mass in northern Nigeria, injuring a number of worshippers, officials and witnesses said.

The attack happened in the Malali neighborhood of Kaduna, a city on the dividing line between Nigeria's largely Christian south and Muslim north where religious rioting has killed hundreds in recent years. The car tried to force its way past the gate at St. Rita's Catholic church just before it exploded, witnesses at the church said.

Yushua Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, also said initial information suggested the attack was by a suicide bomber in a car. He said "a number of casualties" had been taken to local hospitals, but could not give a specific number.

Police officers and soldiers surrounded the site of the blast. Security officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes as the Muslims in the nation are celebrating the Eid al-Adha holiday in Nigeria. In recent days, rumors have circulated that the radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which is responsible for hundreds of killings this year alone, might try to launch an attack during the holiday. The sect has demanded the release of all its captive members and has called for strict Shariah law to be implemented across the entire country. However, the group, which speaks to journalists in telephone conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment.

The sect has used suicide car bombs against churches in the past, most noticeably a 2011 Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church in Madalla near Nigeria's capital. That attack and assaults elsewhere in the country killed at least 44 people. An unclaimed car bombing on Easter in Kaduna killed at least 38 people on a busy roadway after witnesses say it was turned away from a church.

After the April 2011 presidential election, protests in Kaduna over Christian Goodluck Jonathan winning quickly turned into ethnic and religious violence that saw hundreds killed in that state alone.

Hamlin wins truck race at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) ? Denny Hamlin ducked under Matt Crafton with five laps to go and won the NASCAR Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway on a day when the points lead was significantly jumbled with three races remaining.

The victory Saturday was Hamlin's second in the series, both on NASCAR's oldest track. It came after he missed the drivers' meeting because it conflicted with the final minutes of Sprint Cup practice, and had to start at the rear of the field.

The tricky layout proved more problematic for the championship contenders, and knocked Ty Dillon from the lead he has held since mid-September and seemed on his way to increasing. That was before Dillon, running sixth, cut a tire with 48 laps to go, spent significant time on pit road and finished 28th, and fell 21 points behind James Buescher.

Buescher, who started the day one point behind Dillon, seemed to be the one who was going to take a big hit for the first half of the race. His team struggled to get his truck working right, and at one point, he was running 28th himself. He also went a lap down, but got it back as the "lucky dog" on a restart, and rallied to finish sixth, good enough to take to lead.

Dillon is second, and pole-sitter Timothy Peters is third, 25 points back.

"The second half of practice we got better, and the second half of the race, we turned it around, too," said Buescher, the series leader with four victories this season. "This team knows never to give up. We came from two laps down to win a race this year, and came from a lap down to take the points lead."

The finish came on a seven-lap dash to the finish, and left many drivers unhappy. Crafton had harsh words for the way Hamlin passed him, and several drivers seemed less than amused with the aggressive approach of Nelson Piquet Jr.

The former Formula One driver made numerous passes not typically seen at Martinsville, and made them work for him, rallying to finish second. He was followed by Joey Coulter, Crafton and Scott Riggs. Peters finished seventh.

"Maybe this race I was a bit too aggressive," Piquet said, noting that he's still learning the stock car game.

Crafton sought Hamlin out in victory lane.

"I told him that it took a lot of man to run in the back of somebody," he said. "Not even try to pass me. Didn't even run behind me for one lap to see what he could do. Just ran in the back of me ? that's all he did."

Hamlin laughed it off, joking that Crafton had come to tell him "he was really happy about finishing fourth."

The victory was Hamlin's sixth on the 0.526-mile oval, and he said Crafton had to know what was coming at the end. He said Crafton moved him out of the way first, and that he made his pass with no intention of causing Crafton to crash.

"When you're the leader with a few laps to go, especially at Martinsville, moving him up and out of the groove is standard protocol," Hamlin said.

The truck series will race the next three weekends, at Texas, Phoenix and Homestead-Miami.

Baseball: Tigers crave home cookin' to turn World Series around

DETROIT (Reuters) - After losing the first two games of the World Series in San Francisco, the Detroit Tigers are delighted to be hosting Game Three at Comerica Park on Saturday.

The Tigers are undefeated in four post-season games at Comerica in 2012 and their 50 home wins in the regular season earned them a tie for the second-best record in the majors.

"It's a lot of fun playing here," Tigers catcher Alex Avila told reporters before the team's workout on Friday. "When we're going well, when we have those big innings and the crowd gets into it and stuff like that, it's a great feeling.

"It's all about comfort, really, and guys when they're comfortable normally tend to play better."

Anything other than a victory on Saturday would be considered a disaster as the Tigers cannot afford to fall 3-0 behind in the best-of-seven series.

San Francisco shut down the Tigers' potent bats during the first two games and now find themselves two wins away from their second title in three years.

Anibal Sanchez, 1-1 with a 1.35 earned run average in the postseason, gets the call for the Tigers, while the Giants will send their hottest pitcher, Ryan Vogelsong, to the mound.

Sanchez, 28, opened the year with the Miami Marlins but was shipped to the Tigers in a July trade. He pitches well against the Giants but if Detroit do not start hitting, it might not matter.

In San Francisco, the Tigers had just 10 hits in two games.

"The key is we're going to have to get some runs on the board, obviously," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.

"But Sanchez will be fine. Once he got acclimated here with his new team mates, new manager, new pitching coach, the Detroit scene, he's done very, very well."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez had "a good fastball and secondary pitches".

"He'll throw any pitch at any time," Bochy added. "He throws quality strikes, and we've had our tough times against him. He's a really good pitcher.

"We know we have our work cut out when we're facing him because he's been hard on us."

The 35-year-old Vogelsong played well down the stretch but has turned it up in the postseason, going 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA.

Despite the critical game, Leyland said he would not deliver a pre-game speech to motivate his players.

"I don't have a lot of psychological stuff," he said. "I've never been one of those guys. This is simple to me, we're going to work, bring your lunch bucket, go to work, give them a good day's work for a good day's pay and go home."
